Manifesto in Literature, St. James Press, 2013, produced by Thomas Riggs & Co

From the Editor’s Note:

“The Manifesto in Literature, a three-volume reference guide, provides critical introductions to 300 manifestos throughout the world. As manifestos, all the works share a common trait. They challenge a traditional order, whether in politics, religion, social issues, art, literature, or technology, and propose a new vision of the future.

Among the earliest manifestos discussed in the guide are the Ninety-Five Theses (1517), a critique of the Roman Catholic Church by German priest and professor Martin Luther, and the Politics of Obedience (1552-53), in which French writer Étienne de la Boétie argues that people allow themselves to be ruled by tyrants out of habit and hope for personal gain. Of the twentieth-century art manifestos covered in the book, Art, Revolution, and Decadence (1926), by Peruvian marxist José Carlos Mariátegui, discusses the relationship between revolutionary art and politics, and Gutai Manifesto (1956), by Japanese artist Jiro Yoshihara, contends that representational art perpetuates a “fraud” by creating illusions. More recently, Why Facebook Exists (2012), by Mark Zuckerberg, the American founder of the social network, offers an idealistic vision for his company, arguing that its mission is not profit but increased interpersonal connectivity throughout the world and thus more democratic social, political, and economic institutions.”
